Prof. Franz Pfeiffer nominated for the A. F. Harvey Engineering Research Prize 2023

Shortlist for Research Prize 2023 for medical pioneers

Franz Pfeiffer, Director of the Munich Institute of Biomedical Engineering (MIBE) and Professor of Biomedical Physics, has been shortlisted for the A. F. Harvey Engineering Research Prize 2023 by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Each year the IET awards the prize to an internationally outstanding researcher in one of the following fields: medical, microwave and radar or laser/optoelectronic engineering. This year's theme is medical engineering and technology. The prize is endowed with £350,000.

Franz Pfeiffer's research in biomedical X-ray physics focuses on imaging techniques to improve the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer, lung disease and osteoporosis. His work includes both basic research and the translation of new findings into practical applications. He developed dark-field chest X-ray imaging from the ground up, and has been refining it for over a decade with the aim of making it available to patients.

With over 154,000 engineering and technology professionals in 148 countries, the IET is one of the largest engineering institutions in the world. It is headquartered in the United Kingdom. Six researchers have been shortlisted for the 2023 A. F. Harvey Engineering Research Prize.
